Cambridge City Council Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF)

Cambridge City Council appointed Aran Insulation to work together to deliver a programme of energy efficiency improvement that included solid wall insulation, with part of the project being funded through Social Housing Decarbonisation Funding (SHDF).

The project has resulted in more than 250 SHDF homes and one sheltered housing unit having external wall insulation (EWI), ventilation and loft insulation installed to date, with a further 200 homes scheduled to have solid wall insulation installed in the next 12 months.

Project goals are to:

  • Improve the fabric of the homes

  • Reduce the risk of condensation, mould, and damp issues

  • Reduce the risk of fuel poverty

The Challenge

The main aims of this project are to:

  • Lower CO2 emissions

  • Improve homes to an EPC rating of C

  • Reduce fuel poverty

  • Utilise a fabric-first approach to improvement

Additional consideration also needed to be made for planning timelines and inclement weather.

The Results

Aran applied a variety of measures to 250 homes and a sheltered housing unit in line with the recommendations and design approval of Retrofit Assessment and independent Retrofit Co-ordination including:

The majority of homes have new condensing boilers and did not require heating upgrades at this time.

‘Aran have installed solar PV and other insulation measures along with EWI for CCC. They secured capacity of materials and subcontractors with each of these programs of work for the full duration of the scheme. They ensured a high quality of workmanship was delivered for CCC in all manner of the works they were asked to complete.’
